| Profiling Reemployment Program
The Profiling Reemployment Program (PREP) is primarily aimed at dislocated workers who have been laid off from longtime jobs. PREP is the District of Columbia's version of the federally mandated Worker Profiling and Reemployment Services System.
PREP staffers use profiling techniques to determine which claimants can get the most out of the program. Individuals must be selected for the program; they cannot volunteer for it, although similar services are available from other agencies at DOES.
At a Job Service Orientation (generally during the fifth or sixth week of unemployment), participants are told about available services and are assigned to Case Managers, who will monitor their progress and help them find work. A three-day, five-hour-a-day Job Search Workshop covers such topics as resume preparation, budgeting, interviews, dressing for success, networking, and job search techniques.
After the Workshop, participants are scheduled for one-on-one interviews to discuss and assess their reemployment plans. Attendance at this initial set of services is mandatory.
Individuals who continue collecting unemployment insurance benefits will have a minimum of three additional scheduled contacts with profiling staff every four weeks following their assessment.
PREP participants who express an interest in vocational training are referred to the Dislocated Worker program.
At PREP's Resource Center job-seekers have access to a copier, a fax machine, Personal Computers with resume preparation software, telephones, labor market information, government and private-industry job listings and vacancy announcements, and more. |
